Welcome back to our Scotland update – we’re excited to share with you what we’ve been up to over the summer, and what’s coming up in the months ahead.

First and foremost, we’re delighted to welcome Tamsyn Radmall to the team, our new Scotland Lead. This marks an exciting step for us as Home for Good in Scotland and reflects a desire to grow the work and reach deeper into Scotland. Tamsyn shares:

“Hello! My name is Tamsyn Radmall and I have been working for Home for Good for a few weeks now, overseeing the work in Scotland. I have been living in Edinburgh for 11 years, firstly as a student studying Theology and Philosophy and then moving on to work. I have spent the last seven years both on the leadership team of Central Church and as the director of a charity running leadership courses and conferences in Secondary Schools, primarily focused on schools in deprived areas. I decided to move on from this into a job at Home for Good because I have always had a passion for the cause. My dad is adopted, and we grew up with a strong understanding of what that’s meant for him.

I have loved my first few weeks at Home for Good, getting to know the staff team and the advisory board for Scotland. I have been so encouraged to see an organization that really practices what it preaches. The staff are people with real integrity and genuine passion and belief in fostering, adoption and supported lodgings. It has already been such a joy to work with them and strategise for the work in Scotland.”

Tamsyn would love to connect with you – please do reach out to say hello at [email protected].

September has seen the last few donations roll in from our summer fundraising campaign, Walk with me. On average, children in care are moved 18+ miles because there are not enough local carers. Every child and young person in care should be able to stay in their local area if it’s safe for them to do so. We’re working to find local homes for local children and teenagers so that no one is put in this position. This summer, we wanted to stand with them; we said we would walk with them. Amazingly, individuals, families, groups of friends and whole churches laced up their shoes and took to the streets, trails and mountains to demonstrate their commitment to children in care by walking, rolling, scooting – any kind of moving! – around 18 miles, raising vital funds for Home for Good in the process. At the time of writing this update, we’ve raised nearly £20,000 – isn’t that incredible! And we know of a few more who are still to take on their walk. We want to say an enormous THANK YOU to everyone who walked with us this summer, and to all who donated. Your support will make a huge difference for children in care.

The Scotland team have had a busy summer with several speaking engagements and meetings with church leaders. Refuel festival was a great experience; we had an event space and made some great new connections with churches across North East Scotland, particularly in North Aberdeenshire.

Rosie and Tamsyn also attended the Church of Scotland Guild Gathering in Edinburgh at the beginning of September as a way of beginning the third and final year and a project of the Guild. We just love visiting churches, so if you would like a Home for Good speaker to visit your church, please visit our website and complete the Book a speaker form. If you’d like to find out more about what it means to be a Home for Good Church, you can read more here.

Rosie is in the process of welcoming three new Champions into our network from Trinity Church Perth – hopefully we’ll be able to introduce them to you in our next update! We’re so excited by the passion these ladies have, and their heart for supporting and inspiring carers within their church and across Perth. We are delighted to have partnered with the Baptist Union of Scotland to offer training to their ministers, supporting them to help make their churches spaces of welcome, understanding and belonging for care-experiences children and young people. We will be hosting a seminar at the end of September – please pray that this is a fruitful opportunity!

We’re really looking forward to being at the Scottish Vineyard Leaders Conference at the beginning of October. Please come and say hello if you’re going to be there, or spread the word to others you know are going! Home for Good is well supported by a number of Vineyard churches and we know there are many foster carers and adoptive parents in these churches too. We’re also going to be at Glorious Women’s Conference in Aberdeen on 18 November. We would love it if anyone wanted to come and help us out at the stand! If you’re keen, please get in touch.

While the summer may be drawing to a close, our resolve to secure better for children and young people remains strong. We know that this ‘back to school’ season can be really challenging for some children and young people with care experience; for some, it can be one of the hardest times of year. That’s why we’ve launched our Back-to-school fundraising campaign. With your support, we can find more foster carers, adoptive families and supported lodgings hosts – because it’s easier to go back to school when you know you’ve something stable to come home to. Donate today and invest in the lives of children and young people. Find out more here.
