Torbay needs more foster carers
The average number of children in care is much higher in Torbay than most other areas in England (118 per 10,000 children under 18, compared to its neighbour Devon; 52 per 10,000 under 18). Home for Good began working with Torbay Council to help find families who will welcome children through fostering.
We believe that the Church is ideally placed to meet this need. We want to find foster homes from church communities in Torbay, so children and young people can find stable and loving homes close to their schools, friends and wider support networks. This is key to enable children and young people to thrive.
The need
Home for Good and Torbay Council are striving to increase the number of foster homes so children can stay close to their schools, friends, and family and won't have to travel long distances to see them, or access education.
We want to see this change – and we believe that the Church in Torbay can be part of making that happen.
Torbay Council are committed to ensuring that all of their cared for children have access to high quality, matched, local fostering placements when they need them.
Currently, Torbay particularly need people who can welcome:
- Short term or respite carers who have the capacity to meet the varying needs of children with learning or physical disabilities and complex needs.
- Short, medium and long term carers who have the capacity to meet the needs of adolescents, or those children and young people stepping out of residential settings into fostering family settings.
- Short, medium and long term carers who have the capacity to care for larger sibling groups, in order that siblings can be kept together when assessment deems this to be in their best interests.
- Short term or respite carers who have the capacity and availability to care for a variety of cared for children in emergency situations.
Maren Hedermann - Torbay Coordinator
Maren is working with churches, organisations, and individuals across Torbay, helping them explore fostering and adoption and the part they can play in meeting the needs of vulnerable children and young people in their area. Another part of her role is to work with the local council, building partnership, offering support, and journeying together on finding a home for every child that needs one. Having worked as a youth and children's worker the last 10 years, Maren has a passion for seeing children and young people thrive in Torbay.
